Him is not your typical sports movie, it’s an unflinching, anxiety-inducing dive into the psyche of a man who refuses to accept limits. The film follows Cam Cade (Tyriq Winters) a rising football star whose relentless pursuit of greatness demands that he sacrifice everything; family, friends, even pieces of himself, in the name of becoming the best.

At its core, Him is a brutal character study. It’s dark, emotionally suffocating at times, and lingers with you long after the credits roll. For some viewers, that intensity has translated into polarizing reviews. Much of the criticism has centered around the film’s unapologetically masculine tone, what some might label “toxic.” But to dismiss it on those grounds alone is to miss the bigger picture: Him isn’t glorifying destruction, it’s dissecting it.

The performances are what elevate this story into something special. Marlon Wayans delivers what is hands down the best performance of his career, gone is the comedic edge audiences know him for, replaced with a raw, haunted intensity that makes him nearly unrecognizable. And Cam Cade (Tyriq Winters) a newcomer, is purely magnetic. His talent is undeniable, and this role proves he’s an actor to watch in the years ahead.

Director/writer Justin Tipping leans heavily into a bleak, high-pressure atmosphere that mirrors the suffocating demands of elite sports. The constant tension kept me on edge, making Him less of an inspirational sports flick and more of a psychological thriller, as advertised (sorry rotten tomato critics).

If you’re looking for a feel-good underdog story, this isn’t it. But if you’re ready for a film that digs into obsession, sacrifice, and the cost of chasing greatness, Him is a must-see.

To be completely honest I rarely give out high scores. Despite its’ less than stellar opening and not so great reviews, I felt this movie needed justification. 7/10 is not something I give out for free and must be earned (you’ll get the reference later). Thank you for reading amigos. Stay tuned for more takes on new films 🎥
